What is an excused absence?
- Parents/Guardians are responsible for notifying the school of the child’s absence within 24 hours. Each day a child is absent, OCS requests a written excuse/doctors note from the parent or guardian.
- Immediately upon their return, students who miss school must bring a note from their parent, guardian, or health care provider, explaining their absence, tardiness, or early departure. This written note should include the student's name, date of absence, reason for the absence, and the parent's signature. This note should be given to the Student Support Service office when the student returns to school.
- If the parent/guardian reports 3 or more consecutive absences as personal illness, a doctor’s note will be required.
- Work due to absence, lateness, or early departure must be made up.
- It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to provide the school secretary with updated contact information, both address and phone number. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes unless they are sick or have been officially excused. The list below provides examples of absences, tardiness, or early departure that OCS considers excused. This list only provides examples and is not meant to be exhaustive.
Examples of Excused absences:
A. Personal illness
B. Illness or death in the family
C. Medical or mental health appointments which cannot be scheduled outside the school day.
D. Religious observance;
E. Required court or legal appearances;
F. Approved college visits;
G. Approved cooperative work programs;
H. Military obligations.
I. Student Service Appointments
J. Out of School Suspension
What are Absence phone calls?
If student is marked absent to 1 or more classes within a day, parents & guardians will receive a text, call, and email notification.
Mandated Reporting
It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that students attend school regularly and arrive on time. As educators in New York State, Opportunity Charter School staff are mandated reporters. This means we are required by law to report any suspicions of abuse or maltreatment, including educational neglect.
If a student’s attendance is a significant concern, we will reach out to parents/guardians to formulate a plan for improved attendance. If attendance does not improve and reaches a level deemed educationally neglectful, OCS will report the concern to the appropriate agency.
Our primary goal is to work together with families to support student success and well-being. Reporting is a step we take when necessary to ensure the safety and educational rights of our students.
